Cheomseongdae

Cheomseongdae is the oldest astronomical observatory known in the East. Cheomseongdae, located in the middle of Daeneungwon (Cheonmachong), where the Silla palace Wolseong and Silla royal tombs are concentrated on a large scale, was built during the reign of Queen Seondeok (635 to 647).

Cheomseongdae, designated as National Treasure No. 31, is a nine-meter-high stone pagoda in a cylindrical shape, covered with a wide square stone like a lid, and a square window entrance of about one meter by one is still left in the middle of Cheomseongdae.

And at the entrance of Cheomseongdae, there is a small “digital Cheomseongdae” that explains Cheomseongdae in an easy-to-understand manner, such as the structure and the story of Cheomseongdae.

It is one of the most well-received buildings of Silla as a structure that exquisitely harmonizes Silla’s unique elegant curved beauty, squares, and circles.
