Gangneung-si, about 30 minutes' drive east of Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium, where the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics were held, faces the wide East Sea to the east, and Odaesan National Park is 1,563 meters above sea level at the point where the Taebaek Mountains extend eastward. To the west, Pyeongchang-gun, where the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics were held, is located on the border of Daegwallyeong Pass, a pass of 832 meters above sea level.

The main attractions include Ojukheon, where Yulgok Yi I, who is praised as one of the two major Confucian Neo-Confucian scholars in Korea, was born, and Seongyojang, a beautiful traditional Korean building built in the 1700s.
